The validity of each cryptocurrency's coins is provided by a blockchain. A blockchain is a continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography.[23][26] Each block typically contains a hash pointer as a link to a previous block,[26] a timestamp and transaction data.[27] By design, blockchains are inherently resistant to modification of the data. It is "an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way".[28] For use as a distributed ledger, a blockchain is typically managed by a peer-to-peer network collectively adhering to a protocol for validating new blocks. Once recorded, the data in any given block cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks, which requires collusion of the network majority.

The new cryptocurrency came a long way from trading below $4 just two years ago. Major online and offline retailers are starting to add the new currency as a payment method. But what exactly is bitcoin?

Other projects like OmiseGo are now building on top of Ethereum, using this as a parent chain and providing scaling solutions such as Plasma to really push the boundaries of what is currently possible with Ethereum, other such projects like Raiden are also important in the long run as they allow transaction speeds to ramp up, whilst there are a range of other projects to speed up bitcoin exchanges and bitcoin applications such as the lightning network, Ethereum too will be using sharding along with other side chain projects to allow for a much more efficient and expansive system for everyone to participate.
Here’s why. Ethereum is based on blockchain technology where all transactions are meant to be irreversible and unchangeable. By executing a hard fork and rewriting the rules by which the blockchain executes, Ethereum set a dangerous precedent that goes against the very essence of blockchain. If you had started mining Bitcoins back in 2009, you could have earned thousands of dollars by now. With the 2008 financial crisis still fresh in people’s minds, most wrote off Bitcoin’s rising price as just another ‘’bubble’’. But what a lot of people failed to grasp is why the price is going up. While speculation and betting on higher prices certainly played their part in the process, a major reason behind the gains is very simple, increased adoption of the cryptocurrency.

The presumed rationale is that by forcing miners to commit more computing power, Nakamoto was making miners more invested in the long-term survival of the network.

The reward for doing so -- a miner's fee if you will -- is payment in that block's coin. The payment is based on how much their hardware contributed to solving that puzzle. Where do the coins come from? By design, that's exactly how the coins are created. The block is solved and coins and distributed fairly to miners. This increases the coin's supply.
Mine It: The easiest—but slowest—way into Bitcoin is to mine it. Set up a dedicated computer to do nothing but decrypt Bitcoin blocks, install some Bitcoin-mining software and let it do its thing. Again, doing so on a mid-range desktop could take upwards of a year or more to fully decrypt a single block. That's not going to be worth the time or effort.
